Written by Kevin Pietersen It’s not often that cricket games get the kind of attention and buzz only reserved for the likes of FIFA and NBA. But when EA Sports Cricket 2007 was announced, cricket fans went nuts! I can recall walking into a sports shop in 2005, and all these people were waiting to buy it. I had no idea what they were on about because I was still playing with a taped up ball and bat in my backyard (and quite frankly, we didn’t know any better). So myself and the rest of the team at THE RAIN got together to share some personal memories from that time, as well as our thoughts on what could make this year's game even more realistic. According to EA Sports, cricket is on its way back on the big screen in an official film starring Sachin Tendulkar, with the production set to release in India this year. A new cricket game featuring some 'cool' technology was never high up on anyone's wishlist, but if it figures in the film, I'd be forced to pre-order it. While no firm date has yet been announced, the game will be released in the UK shortly after the Test series between England and Australia ends. The World Cup of cricket is being held in India later this year. This time around, real player names and the official logos of the International Cricket Council (ICC) is expected. EA Sports Cricket 2007 had a hell of a time trying to get around licensing issues with the official logos and player names. The makers claim that with all the new features and improvements, they've managed to build on their previous efforts as well as their own expectations. I'm not sure how true that is with regards to what we're expecting from them, but it sounds like a winner for those who've never really played cricket before. It's all about realism and immersion., which is what we always look for in video games. The fact that it's based on the India test series adds to the realism, especially with regards to the pitches. We can't wait to see how it turns out. The game has received mixed reviews. GameSpot gave it 6/10, followed by a 2/10 from Eurogamer. Meanwhile, IGN gave it a 7/10. My only gripe is that they haven't included an indoor mode or any local leagues or tournaments, which would make for great party games when the family comes over! The good news is you can still create your own team in franchise mode and add a few players in there if you want. Oh, and the crowd in the game is quite realistic; you'll rarely find yourself in a game when it's deader than dead. Cricket in India is yet to explode like football in the UK. However, I was at the opening of an arcade bar when I noticed numerous cricket games stacked beside each other. The bar won't be closing anytime soon; there are even more cricket games coming out soon. What this tells me is that there are lots of cricket-lovers all around India. Cricket is finally on its way to becoming a mainstream sport in India, which means it's only a matter of time before we start seeing televised matches here. cfa1e77820
